A Biological Coevolution Model with Correlated Individual-Based Dynamics
نویسندگان
چکیده
The dynamics of biological coevolution poses many problems of interest to the statistical-physics and complexsystems communities [1, 2]. Recently, we studied a coevolution model that is a simplified version of the one introduced by Hall, et al. [3, 4, 5, 6]. Our model, in which individuals give birth, mutate and die, displays punctuated equilibrialike, quiet periods interrupted by bursts of mass extinctions [7, 8]. Interactions in this model were given by a random interaction matrix. Here we report on a modified version of the model, in which we have added correlations to the interaction matrix in order to increase the biological realism. The modified model is compared with the original one to assess the effects of correlations.

Effects of correlated interactions in a biological coevolution model with individual-based dynamics
Models of biological coevolution have recently been proposed and studied, in which a species is defined by a genome in the form of a finite bitstring, and the interactions between species i and j are given by a fixed matrix with independent, randomly distributed elements Mij . A consequence of the stochastic independence is that species whose genotypes differ even by a single bit may have compl...
متن کاملFluctuations and correlations in an individual-based model of biological coevolution
We extend our study of a simple model of biological coevolution to its statistical properties. Staring with a complete description in terms of a master equation, we provide its relation to the deterministic evolution equations used in previous investigations. The stationary states of the mutationless model are generally well approximated by Gaussian distributions, so that the fluctuations and c...
متن کاملSelf-optimization, community stability, and fluctuations in a class of individual-based models of biological coevolution
We study a class of individual-based models of biological coevolution. These are multispecies, stochastic population-dynamics models in which the reproduction probability for individuals of a particular species depends nonlinearly on the population sizes of all the species present in the community. New species are introduced through a small probability of mutation during reproduction. For a sub...
متن کاملAntagonistic coevolution between quantitative and Mendelian traits.
Coevolution is relentlessly creating and maintaining biodiversity and therefore has been a central topic in evolutionary biology. Previous theoretical studies have mostly considered coevolution between genetically symmetric traits (i.e. coevolution between two continuous quantitative traits or two discrete Mendelian traits). However, recent empirical evidence indicates that coevolution can occu...
متن کاملPunctuated equilibria and 1/f noise in a biological coevolution model with individual-based dynamics.
We present a study by linear stability analysis and large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of a simple model of biological coevolution. Selection is provided through a reproduction probability that contains quenched, random interspecies interactions, while genetic variation is provided through a low mutation rate. Both selection and mutation act on individual organisms. Consistent with some curren...
